Raising a New Flag to our Healthcare Heroes

This month Portland Street Honda proudly raised our new  "Healthcare Hero Flag" over the dealership. The flag was designed by local retired nurse Deb Hartlen, to praise the hard-working healthcare workers who assist and support our community, particularly during the pandemic.

Similar flags can be seen at hospitals across Nova Scotia this month, as well as outside the Halifax Chamber of Commerce.

The design consists of a red heart on a white background flanked by two blue bars. There is also a stethoscope piercing the heart and indicating a heartbeat.

"The blue of the two ends represents the code blue emergency," Deb Hartlen told CBC News. "And I tried to find a colour that was close to the scrubs that are often worn in ICUs, emergencies, ORs, or those kinds of settings. The heart with the stethoscope through it was for the care and compassion that patients receive from those providers, and also how they feel towards the people who are providing the care."

The flag will remain in place as part of the ongoing Race to 1000 in support of the IWK Foundation and we encourage anyone interested in learning more about the flag (or purchasing one of their own) to drop by the Flag Shop in Dartmouth (115 Main Street).
